Tooth pain comes from two places. The nerve in the tooth and the nerves in the jaw bone surrounding the tooth. The nerve in the tooth will elicit pain to temperature, and biting. The nerves in the jaw will elicit pain to biting and touching the area. When the nerve in the tooth is first involved, it will be sensitive to cold. As the nerve becomes more involved, the pain to cold will linger longer. As the condition of the nerve worsens, hot will bother the tooth more, and linger longer. As the bone becomes involved, chewing will hurt as the pain can radiate out through the jaw.
